Tips For Getting Your Own Custom Drapes

By Gary Carter

Your choice of curtains can either make or break your home. Be careful about what you choose when making this decision. You can greatly improve the look of your house by upgrading your window treatments. In order to make them unique, so that they stand out, instead of going for the usual curtains, consider getting custom drapes based on your preferences. Here are some helpful tips to guide you through the process.

Using a tape measure, take measurements of the windows. This is from the top to the bottom, based on how long you want the curtains to be and from one side of the window to the other end. Whatever measurements you get, increase this size by at least twice or three times. This is the right size of curtains that you need. The extra material will fold over when the curtains are drawn, giving it a nice flowing look. Don't buy the exact measurements of the window, as this could end up being too small.

You then need to pick the material that you will use. Decide where you will buy the material. You want to look around first, so that you can find an affordable price to make your purchase. This is because you are going to be using lots of material and you need a place that will sell you the material at a reasonable price.

Next, choose the pattern and the color of the fabric. This should match with your existing decoration. Take into consideration how your carpet looks like and the color of your seats. Find colors and patterns that match this or complement them. Remember that the curtains will help in defining how your entire room looks like, so be careful when making your selection.

You will also need to buy fabric for the lining of the curtains. The lining helps to prevent the sun rays from making your curtains fade. The lining can also help in keeping out excess light from the house once you draw them. They can also give the curtains a sense of heaviness. You can have one or two linings sewn onto the curtains.

Launder the fabric before sewing it up. Then iron it. Washing it prevents it from shrinking after it has already been sewn up, which can affect how the curtain looks like. You need to iron the fabric and straighten it out, so as to get better measurements when cutting it out or sewing it up.

The next step is to have the window treatments tailored. If you are a good seamstress, then you can handle this part on your own. However, if you are not talented in this area, you are better off having an expert sew it up for you. Another choice is to make an order from shops that specialize in making bespoke orders. Just let them know your preferences and they will do it for you.

Once all the sewing has been done, hang the window treatments. Assess how it looks like. Realize that you can adjust it as you want until you are happy with the end results. After this, you can then consider repeating this whole process for any other room where you want to set up bespoke window treatments.
